PANCHKULA: A drunk car driver dragged an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) for five metres on being asked to show his vehicle documents in Sector 20 on Wednesday night.

ASI Rakesh Kumar said in his police complaint, “I, along with constable Kapil Dev and PCR Gypsy driver Jagtar Singh, was patrolling Sector 20. Outside a tavern in the parking lot of the area market, people were consuming alcohol in five to six cars around 11.40pm. We asked them not to drink at the public place and leave. All except a red Maruti Suzuki Swift car left.”

The ASI again asked the red car driver, who was drinking, to leave, but he did not. “I then went to him and sought the vehicle documents. I was standing on his left and my hand was inside the car. Suddenly, the car driver slid the window up and my hand got stuck. The car’s ignition was already on and the driver pressed the accelerator,” added the ASI posted at Sector 20 police station. After being dragged for over 15 feet in the parking lot, the ASI managed to pull his hand out. As the car driver sped away into darkness, the other two PCR personnel took the injured ASI to Sector 6 civil hospital. He was later referred to a private hospital in Sector 21.

Doctors attending on him said there were multiple fractures on the right side of his face up to the eye and on the left hand and legs and that plastic surgery would have to be performed.

The ASI and his colleagues could not note down the registration number of the car due to darkness. Sector 20 SHO inspector Vikash Kumar said, “We are scrutinising the footage of CCTV cameras installed in the market.”

Police have registered a case under sections 333 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 307 (attempt to murder), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the IPC.
