Cape Town – Box office hit Crazy Rich Asians opens in South African cinemas today.

This is the first film in a modern setting by a major Hollywood studio to feature a majority Asian cast since 1993's The Joy Luck Club.
The story follows Rachel (Constance Wu) a young Asian-American woman who travels to meet her boyfriend's family (Henry Golding), only to find them to be among the richest in Singapore.

Also showing: Denzel Washington in his first ever sequel, Glenn Close in a riveting drama and a directorial debut by Oliver Daly starring a robot-dog.

Here are the 4 new releases in SA:

Movie: The Equalizer 2

Our rating: 2/5

Short review: Despite the presence of one of the greatest movie stars on the planet and an opening forty-five minutes that are really enjoyable, the Equalizer 2 is let down by a bland, generic plot and the sense that it’s never really at home with what it wants to be.

Movie: The Wife

Our rating: 3/5

Short review: The Wife gets by on some tender human moments, crackling dialogue and exceptional performances but it’s far too contrived, unbelievable and tonally off-kilter to ever come close to being a great film.

Movie: A.X.L.

Our rating: 2/5

Short review: A.X.L. is a limp, uninspired feature début for its writer/director that may never be truly terrible but steadfastly refuses to be notable in any respect whatsoever.
