Fear grips motorists who cross the intersection of Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road and Ayyanchery Main Road, Urapakkam. For, motorists from Ayyanchery Main Road come in the wrong direction on the way to the Urapakkam railway station. Often, police personnel belonging to H2 Nandhivaram-Guduvanchery police station (Traffic) deployed at the intersection fail to take action against these motorists.
To enter Railway Station Road, Urapakkam, motorists coming from Ayyanchery Main Road have to turn right at the intersection and then take a U-turn at GST Road, near the Urapakkam bus stop. However, they come in the wrong direction by turning left, to avoid having to take a detour of 2km. They enter Railway Station Road through an opening in the median at the intersection of GST Road and Urapakkam service lane.
Only motorists from Railway Station Road can come through the opening in the median at the intersection of GST Road and the service lane. Motorists have requested the Kancheepuram district Police and State Highways Department to take steps to facilitate an opening in the median.
“A few motorists from Ayyanchery Main Road indulge in speeding and overtaking, causing inconvenience to motorists coming from Guduvanchery. GST Road witnesses heavy flow of traffic, especially heavy vehicles throughout the day. Many accidents have taken place near the intersection,” V. Prabhu, a resident of Urapakkam, said.
P. Ashok, a social activist, says, “The police personnel deployed at the booth remain a mute spectator to the traffic chaos and do not bother to take action against erring motorists who are in a hurry to catch EMUs at Urapakkam railway station. If an opening is facilitated in the median at the intersection, motorists can go directly to Railway Station Road.”
