In Indira Nagar, the intersection of 13th Cross Street and 10th Cross Street can be quite a handful for any motorist who wants to drive by the rule book. An almost similar situation prevails at the intersection of Third Main Road and Canal Bank Road in Kasturba Nagar. Being an important access point for motorists heading to MRTS stations in the region, both intersections are busy. Third Main Road in Kasturba Nagar and 10th Cross Street in Indira Nagar provide connectivity to the Kasturba Nagar and Indira Nagar MRTS stations respectively.
Motorists coming from 10th Cross Street often drive at a sprightly pace and enter the parking slot of the railway terminal, sending vehicle users on 13th Cross Street into a tizzy. These vehicle users will be coming from Adyar and Thiruvanmiyur.
Besides, some motorists coming from 10th Cross Street take a sharp right turn to enter 13th Cross Street, and proceed towards Gandhi Nagar and Kasturba Nagar.
N. Anantharam, a senior citizen and a resident of 13th Cross Street, says, “Every day, accidents take place at this intersection.”
M. Selvam, an auto-driver attached to the auto stand at the Indira Nagar MRTS station, says, “I have taken up the issue with the Greater Chennai Corporation and Chennai Traffic Police, but no action has been taken yet.”
Residents of 13th Cross Street allege there have been cases of young motorcyclists “converting” the street into a racing strip. It may be noted that there has been a similar complaint from Canal Bank Road in Kasturba Nagar.
Laying speed brakers on these roads closer to the intersection can help tackle the afore-mentioned challenges.
Same solution
Constructing speed breakers on a section of Canal Bank Road as well as Third Main Road, closer to the intersection, is the solution for this problem too. At present, a speed breaker has been constructed on Canal Bank Road to regulate the speed of motorists heading towards Gandhi Nagar.
Calls to the authorities of Greater Chennai Corporation to elicit their views about this issue failed to evoke any response.
