Plea to relocate Pallavaram bus stop

When buses halt, movement of other vehicles is hampered

Motorists taking the intersection of Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road and Indira Gandhi Road, Pallavaram, have requested the officials of Cantonment Board St.Thomas Mount-cum-Pallavaram, to shift Pallavaram bus stop.

When MTC buses 66, 166, 266 and M52 plying towards Pammal, Pozhichalur, Avadi and Poonamallee halt at the bus stop, other vehicles, especially cars and vans, cannot move an inch forward, causing traffic snarls on the stretch.

Recently, two-way traffic arrangement was re-introduced on Indira Gandhi Road, after the work on construction of Pallavaram Grade Separator was stalled. However, barricades were not placed on the stretch, making it easier for motorists, towards Pammal and Pozhichalur, to indulge in speeding and overtaking. In the process, they tend to hit approaching motorists towards Thiruneermalai and West Tambaram. In addition, autorickshaws are parked on one side of the stretch, reducing the road space. As a result, pedestrians are forced to walk on the carriageway and commuters wait for their buses in the middle of the road.

‘Create bus shelter’

Commuters say there are two spots – near the intersection of Indira Gandhi Road and Mariamman Kovil Third Street; and intersection of Indira Gandhi Road and Kasim Sahib Street – wherein a bus stop could be created. Additionally, they demand a bus shelter and seating facilities at the bus stop. “It is common to see commuters taking shelter near commercial establishments on the stretch. The situation is worse in the afternoon when the bus frequency is too low. Commuters are forced to wait for a long time in the blazing sun,” S. Nandhini, a resident of Pammal, said.
