Nagpur: On the occasion of ‘teej’, to glorify the tradition and culture of Rajasthan, Pragati
Rajasthani Mahila Mandal staged a melodrama ‘ Bai Jodha Ro Sinjaro’ at Vasantrao Deshpande Hall, Civil Lines on Thursday.
Sushila Purishottamji Maloo and Seema Kothari were the chief guest at the event who lighted the inaugural lamp.
Written by Kiran Mundra and directed by Kalpana Mohta, the play is based on Rajasthan’s widely celebrated festival ‘teej’ and ‘sindhara’ (sinjaro in Rajasthani). Sindhara is celebrated on the fortnight of the ‘sawan’ month just a day before ‘teej’. Sindhara or Sinjaro is a festival of the daughter-in-laws for their prosperity and long life.
Set in the times of Mughal era, the play revolves around protagonists Jodha bai, played by Deepali Mandhana and Emperor Akbar, played by Manisha Sarda. The backdrop of the play is where Jodha comes to her maternal house in Amer along with her brother Sujamal for the first time after her wedding with Akbar to celebrate ‘teej’ and explains the idea behind the festivities of ‘sindhara’ and ‘teej’.
A total of 70 artists successfully staged the play. All the participants are members of Pragati Rajasthani Mahila Mandal which is an organization of 225 women that started some 33 years ago with the motive to work for the betterment of the society.
The play not only highlighted the importance and culture of the festivals of Rajasthan but also portrayed various other cultural specialities of the state of Rajasthan like the famous folk dance. The folk dance is presented when Akbar visits Amer. The fact that Akbar respected and encouraged all the Rajasthani festivals and his love for Jodha was also one of the themes of the play.
Pragati Rajasthani Mahila Mandal has been organizing such events every year to showcase the importance of traditional festivals. The audience loved and appreciated the artists for conveying the significance of the festival in a beautiful medium.
