MUMBAI: The Mumbai Railway board has set a deadline of 10 months for re-construction of
Delisle Bridge in Lower Parel.
The bridge has been shut for vehicular traffic after it was declared unsafe by IIT, Mumbai, on July 24. Demolition work on the bridge began on August 20.
While BMC wanted Western Railway to carry out reconstruction work, WR threw the ball in the BMC's court. However, during a review of railway projects by chief minister
Devendra Fadnavis and Union minister
Piyush Goyal, it was agreed that WR would carry out work on the portion above the tracks and BMC would built the approaches.
A senior WR official said, "Work on the bridge will be completed in 10 months, including the demolition period of three months."
WR had maintained it was not possible for them to construct the bridge as the pillars of the span would come up on BMC area. Moreover, it pointed out there were lots of utilities in the BMC area.
BMC, on the other hand, felt WR was best suited to plan and execute the work above the railway tracks.
It has offered all assistance, including payment for cost of the project.
