BHUBANESWAR: A few minutes after chief minister
Naveen Patnaik inaugurated an
overbridge in Pokhariput, a person died of
electrocution on the bridge here on Thursday.
Police said, the deceased identified as Simanchal Panda, 35, resident of Sundarapada area came to witness the inauguration of the bridge with his daughter. He got electrocuted while he was trying to pulling a balloon put up to decorate the bridge. The balloon was probably charged due to short circuit from decorative lights.
“It was an unfortunate accident. The man came in contact with a snapped electric wire of decorative lights. He was electrocuted," commissioner of police Satyajit Mohanty said.
Asked about negligence, he said, inquiry is going on from all angles. “We have not received any complaint so far,” he added. Panda was rushed to Capital Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.
Chief minister Naveen Patnaik expressed grief over the death of Panda and announced Rs five lakh ex-gratia to the next of his kin.
