Nagpur: City police chief BK Upadhyay, an IPS of 1989 batch, would be back to Central Jail on Friday to inaugurate the outlet for products made by the inmates as a part of their rehabilitation programme. Upadhyay was Addl DG Prisons for the state of Maharashtra before he joined city as police chief around a fortnight ago.
The outlet, which had remained defunct for a long time, would be restarted with a special attraction of selling rakhis made by the women inmates who were imparted training. The occasion to resume the functioning of the outlet with rakhis was in view of the upcoming Rakshabandhan, which would be celebrated on August 28.

Intriguingly, it was Upadhyay, who while working as DIG Prisons (eastern region) here few years ago, had initiated the trend to welcome family members of the inmates on the occasion of Rakshabandhan to tie rakhis to their kin who were behind bars. The trend was later curtailed for security reasons after it had continued for several years.

Apart from the rakhis, the outlets would also have several mementoes, gift items, household materials, upholstery, furniture, decorative items, clothes and such materials made by the male inmates on display. The prison has a number of manufacturing segments where the inmates work as a part of their rehabilitation and skill development activities.
