PUNE: A team of
cybercrime cell of the Pune police on Tuesday busted a fake call centre in New Delhi with the arrest of two fraudsters.
The duo —
Pintu Kumar Yadav (25) and
Satish Raj Yadav (22) of New
Ashoknagar in New Delhi — had duped a woman from Phursungi of Rs54,300 posing as officials of a placement agency. The cybercrime team led by inspector Santosh Barge recovered 14 cellphones, SIM cards, laptop, debit card and Rs40,000 from the duo.
The 25-year-old complainant, working with a multinational consultancy company and possessing an M Pharm degree, had uploaded her resume on an online job portal in December 2017. “One of the suspects posed as an official of a placement agency and contacted the woman under the name of Ankit Mishra. He offered her a job in a good company,” said an officer of the cybercrime cell.
The suspect then told the woman to transfer registration fees, charges for joining letter, insurance fee and training fee to a bank account. “The woman transferred Rs44,300 to the bank account and another Rs10,000 through an e-wallet,” the officer said.
When the woman did not receive any offer letter after paying Rs54,300, she started pursuing Mishra. “She became suspicious when she found all his contact numbers were unreachable. The woman then went to the
Hadapsar police and lodged a complaint. A case of cheating under the Indian Penal Code and the relevant sections of the Information and Technology Act was registered with the Hadapsar police,” the officer said.
With the help of the cellphone call records and technical investigations, the cybercrime team traced the duo to New Delhi and raided the spot. “They were running a fake call centre in New Ashoknagar for the past few months. We suspect that they duped many job aspirants from all over the country,” the officer said.
