Coimbatore: The renovated children’s traffic park of the city police on Balasundaram Road has caught the attention of several other districts in the state and many are planning to replicate the model in their hometown. According to sources, enquiries have been pouring in from various district administrations to set up a similar park in their districts.
“We have received enquiries from almost all the districts in the state,” said Ravichandran, armed reserve inspector, who is incharge of the traffic park in the city.
District administration officials from Salem, Madurai and Trichy had also visited the park recently to understand its plan, design and cost estimation. “Some districts have already started the initial work to set up a similar park,” Ravichandran said.
Inaugurated in January last, the renovated park has seen a footfall of more than 90,000 people till date, he said. “On an average, more than 150 students visit the park daily. We continue to receive an overwhelming response from the public and schools. Students from at least one school visit the park a day.”
Apart from creating awareness on road safety, the park also has staff members to train and certify individuals based on their driving skills, Ravichandran said. “More than 12,000 people have been trained at the park till date.”
It is the only traffic park designed specifically for children to create awareness on traffic rules, a city traffic police official, who didn’t want to be named, said. He attributed the success of the park to the growing response from the children and youngsters.
The park has also inspired many organisations and corporate houses to come up with road safety programmes. “With this successful model, the traffic police have not only inspired children but also officials from other districts,” the official said. The model followed by the traffic police to reduce accidents is 3Es - educate, engineer and enforce.
