Greater Noida: A 24-year-old woman suffered critical neck injuries when she allegedly attempted suicide in their Greater Noida house over dowry harassment by her
husband and parents-in-law.
Rinki Chaprana is currently battling for her life at Sarvodaya Hospital in Kavi Nagar area of Ghaziabad. Her husband has been absconding since her suicide bid on Sunday evening.
Her husband, Mohit Nagar (26), and his four family members have been
booked for attempt-to-murder and dowry torture after her family alleged harassment of Rinki at their hands and even accused them of trying to kill her, police said.
According to the police, Rinki got married to Mohit two years ago and the couple used to live in Panchsheel Colony of Greater Noida’s Chipiyana village, along with four other family members, including her parents-in-law.
Vipin, the brother of Rinki, told TOI that on the evening of August 19, his father received a call from an unknown number that she had tried to end her life and admitted to the hospital in Ghaziabad. “We rushed to the hospital and found that Mohit had taken Rinki to the hospital in a critical condition but he was not there. We tried to contact him and his family but nobody answered our calls,” he said.
According to Vipin, Mohit and his family members compelled her to attempt suicide. “Since the time of their marriage, the four had been harassing Rinki for a car and cash. Very little she told us about the demands they made to her but we always understood that they are not keeping my sister well,” he added.
“We fear that Mohit forced my sister to hang herself or may be he only tried to hang her,” Vipin said.
An FIR has been registered against Mohit and his four family members under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) along with sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act.
Anil Shai, SHO, Bisrakh police station, said that no suicide note was found from her house. “The woman is in a critical state so we have not yet been able to record her statement. We hope to arrest the accused soon,” she added.
