CHANDIGARH: The body of a two-month-old baby girl was exhumed on Tuesday following allegations that she died after her mother threw her with force on a bed in a fit of anger in Ram Darbar.

According to sources, the child helpline had received an anonymous call around a week ago that a couple in the locality had buried their baby girl after killing her. A team visited the area and carried out its investigation after speaking to a number of residents. Officials of the child helpline said some people informed them that when the parents were going to bury the child, the mother started weeping and “repenting”. Officials said the residents told them that the mother was saying that “she had thrown her child on the bed and she died”.

Neighbours told the team that the woman had fought with her husband and carried out the act in a frenzy. Some neighbours even claimed baby’s head was stuck against the wall. Parents had buried her at the Hallomajra cremation ground.

The child helpline team submitted a complaint to the police.

On Tuesday morning, the body of child was taken out from the grave in the presence of Arjun Sharma, SDM (east), and a team of doctors from Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32. Police conducted a post-mortem and handed over the body to her parents, who buried the body at the cremation ground in the evening.

The SDM said the autopsy was conducted at GMCH after receiving a complaint and the exact cause of her death would only be known after the report is submitted. The victim was the first child of couple. However, parents claimed the girl died due to natural cause as she was very weak by birth.

Police have begun investigating the matter and are also looking into the motive behind the caller lodging a complaint against couple. “The post-mortem report will come in a day or two and action against the parents will depends on its contents,” police said.

Sector 31 police have registered a daily diary report (DDR).
