District administration launches 24-hour helpline

Over 1,000 people from different walks of life will take part in a mega sanitation programme in the city on Thursday.

According to District Collector U.V. Jose, the city has been divided into 21 zones each led by a health inspector for the sanitation programme.

A review meeting chaired by Minister for Excise and Labour T.P. Ramakrishnan will be held at the collectorate at 11 a.m. on Thursday. The Minister will hold discussions with officials of the Public Works Department, Department of Irrigation, Kerala State Electricity Board and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited. This will be followed by an all- party meeting at 3 p.m.

Helpline launched

A 24-hour helpline launched by the district administration on Wednesday to clear the debris at the flood-swamped houses and to repair household articles evoked good response from those affected by the calamity.

The centre opened at the district collectorate received about 50 calls in the morning. Most of the victims sought help in cleaning the houses covered with slush and repairing electrical and electronic items. Even people from neighbouring districts are calling the centre, the first of its kind set up in the State as part of the rehabilitation programme.

Around 200 people associated with various voluntary organisations have also offered to do service for the floods victims, the Collector said.

Scientists attached to the Zoological Survey of India and the Energy Management Centre along with teachers and students of Kozhikode Government Law College, Holy Cross College, Devaki Amma Memorial College and Devagiri St. Joseph’s College have worked at the call centre in shifts.

The IT cell of the district administration is coordinating various departments for the successful functioning of the call centre. Facility is provided for sanitation, supply of drinking water, repair of electrical and electronic goods and wiring works. A temporary workshop with the help of the National Institute of Technology - Calicut has been opened at Malabar Christian College to repair electronic items.
