Android Messages may soon get Google Assistant

Google’s track record for messaging applications has not been a good one. The company’s Hangouts and Allo have not yet been exactly bonafide hits in the market. However, Android Messages app is the one that is probably there in more number of handsets these days. The app is now getting AI integration, according to a report. As mentioned by XDA Developers, Android Messages may soon receive Google Assistant in it.
The search giant has not yet confirmed it but the code found by one of the developers inside the app strongly hints the upcoming integration. The developer was also able to run the Assistant in the app, screenshots of which have been posted online.
It has been mentioned that Google Assistant will work in the same fashion like it does in Allo. However, the function seems to be limited. The AI will be limited to recommending nearby restaurants, venues and will suggest users what to reply. For instance, if the assistant recognises a user making plans, it will show the weather of the particular time and place.
However, this is just a code. The final product may include some more features as and when it rolls out.
Talking about the Assistant, recently Google announced that it will deliver curated good news. All you need to say is ‘Tell me something good’ to the Assistant. The feature is limited to Google Assistant in the US for now but will likely reach other regions soon.
"Real people are making progress solving real issues and hearing about those stories is a crucial part of a balanced media diet," said Ryan Burke, Creative Producer, Creative Lab at Google while announcing the feature.
The stories are said to be curated by Solutions Journalism Network, which is a non-profit organisation. The feature will work on Assistant-running smartphones, smart displays and Google Home speakers.
