Pledge for communal harmony

The Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, organised a “Pledge Ceremony” on August 20 on the occasion of “Sadbhavana Diwas” with a view to promote national integration and communal harmony among people of all religions, languages, and regions. The ceremony was administrated by Neelam Sawhney, the secretary of the department.

“AAHAR” commences at Chennai today

The 12th edition of AAHAR Chennai, the international food and hospitality fair, is jointly being hosted by the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) and Tamil Nadu Trade Promotion Organisation (TNTPO) with the support of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India and the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) at Chennai Trade Centre, from August 23 to 25. Around 80 leading Indian companies are featuring a wide range of items such as processed foods, food processing equipment, food additives, and hospitality and hotel supplies at this regional edition of AAHAR. Being an excellent B2B platform for the global food processing and hospitality sectors, it provides a great opportunity for boosting business and tapping the enormous potential of growth of the food industry in the southern region.

More food for Kerala flood victims

The Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Ram Vilas Paswan, informed that the Central Government has taken an immediate decision to help the flood victims of Kerala by allocating an additional 89,540 tonnes of food grains (at a rate of five kilograms per person) for families left out of the National Food Security Act. Under the said Act, Kerala is already being supplied 1,18,000 tonnes of food grains per month, which will continue. As many as 100 tonnes of pulses have already been sent to Kerala through a special aircraft and now in addition, 80 tonnes of pulses will be sent per day.

Celebrate Sri Lankan culture at Kandy Esala Perahera

Held annually, in the full-moon month of “Esala”, the “Kandy Esala Perahera” is the ultimate celebration and showcase of Sri Lanka’s rich heritage and vibrant culture. This year, the festival is scheduled to take place between August 16 to 26 in its usual series of colourful Kumbal Peraheras, Randoli Peraheras and vivacious ritualistic ceremonies. The significance of the month of “Esala”is that it is believed to commemorate the very first teaching imparted by the Buddha, following his enlightenment.

Book Fair in Delhi from August 25

The 24th edition of the Delhi Book Fair is going to be organised at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi between August 25 to September 2 by the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) in association with the Federation of Indian Publishers (FIP). ITPO's other concurrent events, namely, the 4th edition of the Stationery Fair, the Office Automation Fair and the Corporate Gifts Fair are among the major attractions this year.

Maritime cooperation saves the day

In a well-coordinated operation, the Indian Coast Guard along with the Sri Lankan navy, rescued six crew members of the Sri Lankan fishing boat —Jaya Isuru-03. The boat, while engaged in fishing in high seas, had suffered an engine failure and was adrift. A request was received by the Indian Coast Guard from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, Colombo, to assist the fishing boat.
