Crackdown on drug peddlers in Gurugram

Gurugram district police has launched a crackdown against drug peddlers and notorious criminals to curb the illegal consumption of drugs across the district.

As of now, the city police have arrested 72 people under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and 62 cases have been registered under the NDPS Act till August 20.

According to the data compiled by the Gurugram police, 545 kilograms of cannabis (ganja) and 460 kilograms of sulfa have also been recovered by the police during the same duration.

According to the police, the residents of Gurugram allegedly take different types of objectionable substances like cannabis, heroin, marijuana and flavored hukka.

Police sources suspect that most of these drugs are coming from areas of Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Recently a Special Task Force (STF) of the Haryana police had arrested two Nigerians in Gurugram and over 1 kg heroin valued at

Rs 5 crore in the international market was seized from them. 

Also in May the district police had arrested two persons including a woman and recovered around 250 kilograms of marijuana from their possession. The arrested man was posted in Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as a constable and he smuggled the contraband from several parts of Uttar Pradesh (UP).

In the previous year, the city police had also filed 113 cases of NDPS Act and nabbed 116 persons who used to sale Ganja and Sulfa illegally.

Also, around 600 kilograms of Cannabis (ganja) and 461 kilograms of Sulfa have also been recovered by the police in the previous year.

Sources said, adding that help of intelligence agencies will also seek in the matter. The police team also tab an eye on activities of some criminals and shortlisted them and will be arrested soon.

"We have given strict instruction to Station House Officer (SHOs), Chowki Incharge and Police Control Room Riders to identified suspicious criminals who are involved in trafficking of drugs. Also, a police team will conduct awareness programme among youths to aware them about hazardous effects of drugs," said Shamsher Singh, Assistant Commissioner of police (Crime).

"The department is making an effort to connect all backward and forward links to unearth the entire chain of supply and mode of trafficking, end users and source of origin of drugs. We will also increase police presence on outskirts and border areas to prevent trafficking of illegal drugs," Singh, said.
