Nagpur: The Nagpur University has turned down appeals for an extension by post-graduation students who are “illegally” occupying the lower hostel at Law College Square, leading to demonstrations on Thursday afternoon. The students blocked the main gate of Nagpur University on Amravati Road to raise their demand.
Kawya Chaawan, who represented the students, said, “To get lower hostel vacated, the authorities have stopped admission at the upper hostel near Amravati Road. As a result, the upcoming batch could apply for accommodation only at the lower hostel and students staying there were asked to vacate the place on Thursday.”
During a meeting held with the hostel warden and the pro-VC, the students’ representatives requested the authorities to give them three to four days to vacate the hostel until they find some other accommodation in the city. The request was declined and the rooms were locked by evening.
“Some of the students are living here illegally and we are just following the rules. We have a list of 119 students doing double PG who reapplied for the hostels but as per the rules we can’t give them rooms on the campus,” said Sham Korreti, warden of the lower hostel.
The authorities had instructed the students to vacate hostels on Tuesday. Korreti further said, “Our priority is providing accommodation to new students. Only after this we will consider requests of students doing double PG.”
