The district-level meeting here on Thursday to review the relief and rehabilitation in the areas affected by flood and landslides called for constituting people’s platforms under the aegis of local bodies to make inhabitable all the houses that were damaged or rendered uninhabitable by the monsoon fury.
The meeting chaired by Health Minister K.K. Shylaja decided to take steps at all levels for making compensations and other benefits from the government available to people affected by the disaster.
Steps were also required to mobilise assistance at local levels with the support of the people, the meeting stressed.
Addressing the meeting, the Minister said that the government was presently engaged in activities to ensure emergency disaster relief. The government was planning a special package for reconstructing in the long-term the disaster-hit areas, she said.
Special attention
The Industries Minister E.P. Jayarajan, who was also present at the meeting, called on the local bodies to give special attention on rehabilitation activities.
Special committees should be constituted at ward and local body levels to organise rehabilitation initiatives, he added.
P.K. Sreemathy, MP, MLAs K.C. Joseph, Sunny Joseph, C. Krishnan, Communist Party of India (Marxist) district secretary P. Jayarajan and district Congress president Satheesan Pacheni were among those present at the meeting.
