Cousin of convicted terrorist Talal Alameddine arrested with loaded gun in his underwear

A man arrested with a loaded gun in his underwear at Edgecliff on Wednesday is the cousin of convicted terrorist Talal Alameddine.

Ahmad Alameddine, 28 and Dylan Salmond, 28, were pulled over by police on Glenmore Road about 2.30pm when Mr Salmond ran a red light.

Police "spoke to the two male occupants and developed reasonable suspicion to search them and the vehicle", according to a police media statement.

Mr Alameddine allegedly became aggressive and resisted arrest. He was subdued by police and officers allegedly located a loaded gun in his underwear.

He was charged with possessing a loaded firearm in a public place, possessing an unregistered pistol and possessing a prohibited drug.

Court documents show that he was allegedly in possession of the drug ice.

Police also located more than 2000 Xanax tablets, which they say Mr Salmond admitted possessing.

He was charged with supplying a prohibited drug and possessing a prohibited drug.

Mr Alameddine is the cousin of Talal Alameddine, who was convicted of supplying the loaded gun that schoolboy killer Farhad Jabar used to assassinate police accountant Curtis Cheng.

Earlier this year, he was sentenced to at least 13 years jail for supplying a pistol to someone unauthorised to possess it and recklessly possessing a thing connected with terrorism.

Mr Alameddine's other cousin, Talal's brother Rafat Alameddine, was in 2016 charged with his role in a group that allegedly forged payslips, bank statements and tax assessments in order to lodge millions of dollars of fraudulent loan applications.

Mr Alameddine's mother and three other female supporters were at Waverley Local Court on Thursday for his appearance.

Shackled and looking downcast, he blew the four women a kiss from the dock.

He did not apply for bail, which was formally refused by Magistrate Mary Ryan.

The matter will return to court in September.

Mr Salmond also did not apply for bail, which was formally refused. He will return to the same court next week.
