Transport Minister M.R.Vijayabhaskar on Tuesday said efforts were being made to provide infrastructure for the new Government Medical College coming up at Gandhigramam in Karur by September next.
Speaking to reporters after chairing a meeting with Collector T. Anbalagan and officials to review the progress of construction of buildings for the college, ahead of a expected visit of a team from Medical Council of India, Mr.Vijayabhaskar said the works were progressing fast on the 17.45-acre site. Construction of various buildings had been sanctioned at a total estimate of ₹269.59 crore.
Buildings for classrooms with a plinth area of about 3.20 lakh sq ft were being built at a cost of ₹75.79 crore. A 800-bedded hospital, which would be attached to the medical college, was being constructed at a cost of ₹122.79 crore. Construction of a hostel for students would cost another ₹71 crore.
“A team from the Medical Council of India is expected to visit soon to examine the infrastructure being created for the college. Steps are being taken to provide all necessary facilities at the hospital and also appoint adequate number of doctors and teaching professionals. All efforts are on to complete the works and get approval for admissions by September next year,” Mr.Vijayabhaskar said.
M. Geetha, MLA, Krishnarayapuram, Edwin Joe, Director of Medical Education, S. Surya Prakash, District Revenue Officer, and Rosy Vennilla, Dean, Karur Government Medical College, attended the meeting.
