1L houses test positive mosquito breeding

Nearly one lakh fourteen thousand mosquito breeding sites were found in houses across the city till August 18, according to a report issued by the civic bodies, which are grappling with rising number of cases of vector-borne diseases.

The number of malaria cases has reached to alarming level and with more monsoon rains lashing the state making it more vulnerable to vector borne diseases. Among the areas falling under the three municipal corporations, the cases of breeding reported were 27802 under North Corporation, 47131 in south and 28108 in areas comes under East Corporation.

Further, the civic bodies have issued 96,526 legal notices for related violations and prosecuted 12,878 people and establishments after mosquitogenic conditions were reported in their houses or premises.  Among these, 4980 prosecution was launched by South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) while the figure of north civic body is 4607 for the same. Officials of three corporations claimed to have sprayed insecticides in around 5, 21,225 houses by 'dengue breeding checkers' and conducted 53353 blood slide examination to detect cases of vector borne diseases. 

According to corporation's health officials, domestic breeding of mosquitoes is one of the main factors responsible for people contracting these vector-borne diseases. "Water coolers, storage utensils, bird and dog-feeders left in the rain, are known to be typical places where Aedes mosquito breeds,” the official said.
