The ashes of the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who died last week, will be immersed in eight rivers in Karnataka by the Bharatiya Janata Party State unit.
The party State unit leaders on Wednesday brought urns containing ashes to the party State headquarters in Bengaluru from New Delhi.
The urns, handed over to State president B.S. Yeddyurappa by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a programme held in New Delhi, were brought in a procession from the Kempegowda International Airport to the headquarters.
On Thursday, the ashes will be carried by road to Srirangapatna for immersion in the Cauvery, according to Mr. Yeddyurappa. A slew of senior leaders, including Mr. Yeddyurappa, will accompany the procession.
The ashes will also be immersed in the Netravathi, the Malaprabha, the Krishna, the Karanja, the Tungabhadra, the Sharavati and the Tunga on Friday while a condolence meeting will be held in Bengaluru on Sunday, he said.
