Utkal Gandhi Smarak Nidhi former chairman Prahallad Kumar Sinha has written a letter to PM Narendra Modi urging him to scrap the water aerodrome proposal in Chilika.

Sinha said that operation of seaplanes will pose a threat to the birds of the lake, which are a major attraction for the tourists. Since birds are not safe for flying of planes, the authority can’t go for driving away all birds from the lake which is itself a bird sanctuary, said Sinha.

Similarly, he stated that the operation of the water aerodrome will rob the boat operators and fishers of their livelihood, besides spelling doom for the dolphins and other creatures of the lake’s ecology by way of pollution.

On the contrary, Sinha proposed the Centre to operate water aerodrome in consultation with the State at Hirakud, Mundali or Naraj on the Mahanadi or any other suitable places other than the Chilika lagoon in the State to boost tourism.
