2018 BMW M5 Takes On Tesla’s Model S And Model X P100D

Anybody sitting behind the wheel of BMW’s latest M5 has to feel pretty invincible as far as performance is concerned. It’s not every car that puts down 600 PS (592 HP) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque, so your chances in a straight line race are pretty darn good.

Of course, when you’re that fast, you can’t really test yourself properly unless you challenge some of the fastest-accelerating cars in history, which the all-electric Tesla Model S and Model X just so happen to be.

In P100D form, the two Teslas are quite formidable. They take off as quickly and aggressively as a McLaren 720S, and can cover a 1/4 mile in a time that would be to Dominic Toretto’s liking – or at least the Model S can.

The Model X can do it in the low 11’s, but then again, you’d need an absolute perfect launch from something like the F90 M5 in order to match, or perhaps beat that. Officially, the Bimmer is able to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.4 seconds, and 124 mph (200 km/h) in 11.1 seconds. Go for the optional M Driver’s Pack and you can even remove the limiter and max out at 189 mph (305 km/h).

While these are all very impressive numbers, we definitely shouldn’t expect the new M5 to win every race just because it looks great on paper. Besides, trying to hook as well as a P100D Tesla (regardless of model) is very difficult. So how well do you think the BMW did?
