A herd of wild elephants intruded into farms at Pandi and Kayyanni, under the Adhur police station limits here, and destroyed crops, including areca, coconut palms, and plantain. The attack by a herd comprising seven elephants came shortly after a crop raid by three elephants nearly two days ago.
The Forest officers here managed to drive the animals back into the Karnataka forests.
The animals destroyed the solar fence in the area. A team of officers led by Kasaragod Range Forest Officer N. Anilkumar burst crackers to drive the animals back into the forest.
The animals might have moved to areas bordering Kerala following landslips in Madikkeri in Karnataka, the Forest officers said.
Residents said intrusion of wild elephants into human-inhabited areas was giving sleepless nights to them. The district lacks a Rapid Response Team (RRT) to provide immediate help in case of such attacks.
