AHMEDABAD: A major demolition drive was taken up along the Gurukul Road in the western part of the city on Monday. Another demolition drive was carried out at Sarkhej Crossroads. Tension flared up after a small temple on the road in Sarkhej area was demolished.
The AMC team demolished all illegal structures on the Gurukul to Subhash Chowk stretch. Extensions which were impeding traffic were also razed.

Officials said that this area was one of the most crowded in the city, yet not a single complex had adequate parking space.

A senior AMC official said that on these stretches, several residential colonies facing the main road have been turned into commercial establishments with no parking. So visitors were forced to park their vehicles on the main road.

The new west zone estate team demolished some temperorary sheds, clearing an area of 694 sq metres. Also, 12 extensions were removed, clearing a 999 sq metre area.

On the Sarkhej Crossroads to Shantipura Circle stretch, 11 godowns were demolished and an area of 1,200 sq metres was cleared. As for the temple, leaders of Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad told the AMC that no temple should be demolished. However, the officials said that if a temple was located on a road, it would be demolished but the idol would be shifted to a new location nearby.
