PUNE: Afghan national Ahmed Jan Najmuddin Nazam succumbed to stab injuries in a private hospital on Sunday night, exactly 25 days after he was attacked by two of his compatriots on St Mother Teresa Road off NIBM Road in Kondhwa on the night of July 25.
After the post-mortem was conducted at Sassoon General Hospital, Nazam’s body was handed over to his cousin, Farhad Assadullah, on Monday in the presence of Afghan Embassy officials for sending it to his residence on the completion of legal formalities. The post-mortem report certified the probable cause of the victim’s death as “complications following stab injury to chest.”

The Kondhwa police had initially arrested one of the suspects, Mansoor Ahmed, and booked his accomplice, Nimatullah Ahmadi, on charges of attempt to murder. After Nazam’s death, the police invoked charges of murder against the suspects. A lookout notice to prevent Ahmadi from escaping out of India was issued to the immigration authorities.

Senior inspector Milind Gaikwad, the in-charge of the Kondhwa police, said, “Ahmed is in magisterial custody at the Yerawada central prison. The main suspect, Ahmadi, is on the run since the FIR was lodged on July 26. His passport and residential permit have been seized. We have launched a manhunt to arrest him.”

There was a brawl among some Afghan nationals when Nazam stepped in to resolve it. Ahmadi, in a fit of rage, stabbed Nazam with a knife on his chest. His friend, Ahmed, helped him commit the crime. Another Afghan national, Ridwan Azizulla Ansari, present at the spot, registered an FIR against the assailants.
