Patidar leader Hardik Patel has approached the Gujarat government seeking permission and a venue to hold his hunger strike in Gandhinagar after he was denied the same in Ahmedabad.

Mr. Patel announced that he would go on strike from August 25 in order to press for his demand for quota for the Patidar community in education and government jobs. “Holding peaceful protest or agitation is my constitutional right but the BJP government in Gujarat has denied me permission to hold the agitation anywhere in Ahmedabad,” he said.

A delegation of Congress MLAs on Tuesday called on Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel demanding permission to allow Mr. Patel to hold the protest.

“It is very unfortunate that the state government is denying him permission for holding the indefinite fast. As per our Constitution, every citizen is entitled to hold protest in peaceful manner,” senior Congress MLA Virji Thummar told reporters after the delegation met the Deputy CM.
