In a city with no shortage of Portuguese restaurants, C&J Sal E Pimenta is offering a more modern way to enjoy Portuguese food.

Entirely a takeout/delivery establishment, C&J Sal E Pimenta offers a full hot buffet of food to select from daily as well as a menu of specials, soups, sandwiches, salads, appetizers and desserts.

The delectable-looking meals for sale in the hot buffet (served by the staff from behind a counter) include all the local favorites: pork and littlenecks; cod fish with boiled eggs and potato; half rotisserie chicken with french fries and rice; beef stew; ribs; fava beans; baked chourico and white beans; codfish with cream; seafood rice; spiritual chicken (a casserole baked with veggies) and Portuguese-style fish.

They also offer two additional hot buffet specials on Sundays and Wednesdays. On this particular day, one was Portuguese-style octopus stew.

Catering platters are also a specialty of the new establishment at 190 Alden St. Located in a former fish market in the Flint section of the city, owners Joe Gaspar and his fiance, Cidalia Camara, completely renovated the space before opening a couple weeks ago. The family-run operation also includes Joe Gaspar’s son, Steve Araujo.

Since opening on Aug. 7, Araujo said they’ve been busy right from day one. And this week, as the Great Feast of the Holy Ghost brings thousands of visitors to the city, they will be filling plenty of pre-ordered catering platters, he added.

Cidalia Camara, the chef, has a culinary degree from Portugal and has cooked locally at Caldeiras and Sagres restaurants.

In addition to hot meals ready to serve on the buffet, they also offer an additional 10 meals on the “Specials” section of the menu including chicken Mozambique, Portuguese steak, pork loin, shrimp scampi and chicken parmesan.

Soup fans will find four choices: Portuguese, kale, fish and chicken. There’s also nine sandwiches to select from including steak and pepper, caciola, ham and cheese and vegetarian. A refrigerator out front features an array of single-serve desserts to round things out including passion fruit pudding, flan, rice pudding and chocolate mousse.

They offer delivery on orders over $20.

C&J Sal E Pimenta is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. They're closed on Mondays.
