NHAI to start widening bridge after UP Gate in two weeks

Ghaziabad: The construction work on the bridge across Hindon Canal near UP Gate on Delhi-Ghaziabad border, a part of the NH-24 widening project, is expected to begin within this fortnight.
On Monday, officials of National Highways Authority of India and the UP irrigation department visited the spot to chalk out a plan for carrying out construction work.

The existing bridge, which is 330 metres in length, will be expanded by adding six lanes each on either side.

A general arrangement drawing of the new structure had been presented by the NHAI to UP government in Lucknow for its approval of August 16. The existing four-lane bridge was constructed by NHAI in 1977. “Strengthening work will be undertaken on the existing bridge before it is expanded. Two lanes each will be conjoined on either side of the existing bridge. Two parallel bridges of four lanes each will be constructed adjacent and parallel to the existing structure thereafter,” NHAI project director RP Singh told TOI.

The Hindon Canal bridge is right at the beginning of the second section of NH-24 widening project that covers the distance from UP Gate to Dasna. The second section passes entirely through Ghaziabad and the NHAI has targeted it for commissioning prior to the general elections scheduled to be held next year.

“Widening work on the second section of the project is underway at normal pace. There have been some glitches hampering construction work including shifting of Ganga Jal pipelines from Dasna to Siddharth Vihar. There have been also certain issues like obtaining clearance from the railways for construction of a new over-bridge at Lal Quan. However, these issues are being chalked out. We will meet the target of March 2019 for completion of second section,” said Singh.
