Experts’ deliberation on aspects of Sendai Framework for disasters

Experts from Bihar and Sikkim among others expressed views and suggestions to ensure effective implementation of the Sendai framework of disaster scenarios in Uttarakhand.The experts expressed their views at a workshop organised by the State Disaster Management Authority here on Monday.

The Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority vice chairman VK Sharma spoke in detail about the Sendai framework. Referring to the Kerala floods, he said that the consistent climate changes are also responsible for the situation.Citing the Sikkim earthquake of 2011 and the Odisha cyclone, he stressed on facilitating disaster risk mitigation through coordinated efforts involving all Government departments and the public.

Bihar State Disaster Management Authority vice chairman Shri Vyas informed about the works undertaken in Bihar on lines of the Sendai framework. He said that the rains experienced in Nepal are responsible for the floods in Bihar every year. There is need for investing in disaster resilient infrastructure, he stressed.

Earlier, the Garhwal commissioner Shailesh Bagauli expressed concern about the different types of disasters taking place in the State. He stressed on the importance of timely preparation for minimising the damage caused by disaster.

Disaster Mitigation and Management Centre executive director Piyoosh Rautela spoke in detail about the damage caused in the past by earthquake, flash floods and landslides in the State.
