Says DUSU polls have been losing credibility since few years

The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) on Monday alleged that over the past few years, the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) election had been losing its transparency as well as credibility.

The NSUI alleged that the candidates face number of problems due to irregularity in implementation of rules and political pressure from parties involved.

“Looking at past incidents, in the case of Nikhil Yadav, the presidential Candidate of NSUI 2016-17, there were complaints from varied colleges on the polling day and allegations of unfair polling were made. Similarly, in the year 2017-18, the presidential candidate of NSUI, Rocky Tuseed’s nomination was first cancelled by the committee, but he was later permitted to contest elections as per the orders of the High Court. As a result, he got the least number of days for campaigning than other candidates making it unfair for him,” the NSUI said.

NSUI demanded certain provisions to be made for the upcoming DUSU elections to ensure higher transparency and credibility. It asked that lD cards be issued to eligible student voters, at least one week prior to the day of election. It also called for allotting polling agents, saying one for each candidate contesting elections in every college must be allotted agents to ensure transparency in polling of votes.

The NSUI also called for the use of VVPAT machines among other demands.
