Explain dropping of riots case: SC to UP

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday sought the Uttar Pradesh Government’s response on a petition challenging the dropping of the 2007 Gorakhpur riots case involving Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud issued notice and sought a reply from the state government in four weeks.

SC to consider issue of no bengal contest

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday said it will have to consider the issue that there was no contest on over 20,000 seats in recently-held elections for local bodies in West Bengal in the wake of allegation that the candidates were obstructed from filing their nomination papers.

EC adjourns office of profit case for Aug 24

New Delhi: The EC adjourned for August 24 its hearing on a plea to disqualify 20 Delhi AAP MLAs for allegedly holding office of profit as an order of the Delhi High Court on the legislators’ request to cross examine the petitioner and State Government officials was not out yet. The EC has fixed August 24, next date of hearing in the matter.  On July 23, the EC had adjourned its hearing for Monday (August 20) as the AAP MLAs had moved the Delhi High Court challenging the poll panel’s decision rejecting their demand to cross examine the petitioner who had sought their removal as MLA.

SC to hear plea filed by 300 army men

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday said that it will hear on September 4, a plea by over 300 Army personnel challenging registration of FIRs against them for operations in Manipur and Jammu and Kashmir where the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) is in force.

More rest for loco pilots: nfir

New Delhi: Loco pilots are gripped with “panic” as they fear being sacked for even minor lapses despite working for unusually long hours, the National Federation of Indian Railwaymen (NFIR) has claimed and demanded in a letter to the Railway Board on Monday that they be given enough rest to reduce stress levels.
