AHMEDABAD: A man turned up in family court here on Monday with coins worth Rs 16,000 to pay maintenance amount to his estranged wife, who has slapped a suit against him for deserting her. It took over an hour for the woman and her advocate to count the coins apart from the currency notes worth Rs 9,000.

The man living in Khadia area had to pay Rs 50,000 to his wife towards arrears for past few months. As it was settled in court, he came with Rs 25,000 as first instalment. When he presented a plastic bag full of Rs 5 and Rs 10 coins, the woman refused to accept it. But the husband argued that he earned money through hard labour and she was bound to accept it in the same form. After the court's intervention, the woman agreed.

The woman's advocate Kishor Jamnani said that they counted the coins for over an hour. The man brought Rs 5,000 in Rs 10 currency notes, and the rest of amount was in Rs 100 denomination.
