The 28-year-old is a key part of England’s batting line-up, but left the ground for an X-ray after being hit by a James Anderson delivery, with Jos Buttler taking over the gloves.

England described the injury as a “small” fracture, the BBC reported, adding that Bairstow was expected to bat during the second innings.

India were at 230 for the loss of three wickets and leading England by 398 runs in the day’s second session.
