Indore: Tagore Education College granted autonomous status

Indore: University Grants Commission has granted autonomous status to Tagore Education College following orders given by Supreme Court. With this, the total number of autonomous colleges in the city has reached seven. A Grade B accredited institute, Tagore College applied for autonomous status last year. In the same year, the UGC changed autonomous rules making Grade A accredited colleges eligible for the status.

As a result, the application of Tagore College was declined. “We moved apex court alleging that the rules changed after we had applied for the autonomy so the new rules did not apply on us. The court ruled in our favour,” said college chairman Bunty Parikh.

Following SC’s order, the UGC granted autonomous status to Tagore College. However, it posed a condition that the college would have to obtain Grade A accreditation from NAAC within a year. Other colleges with autonomous status are Prestige, Pioneer, Holkar, Old GDC, Kasturba Gram and Christian Eminent.

The autonomous status allows colleges to hold their own examination and evaluate answer books. They can also revise their curriculum and start any course and decide scheme of exam. Chancellor Anandiben Patel has directed universities to encourage colleges to obtain autonomy from UGC so that universities’ burden of conducting examination and declaring results will reduce.
