Plasterboard falls from truck on Gateway overpass onto cars below

Plasterboard has fallen from a truck on an overpass on the Gateway Motorway at Eagle Farm onto vehicles below.

Traffic was mounting up on the southbound lanes of the busy Lavarack Avenue after the accident and two lanes were blocked, police said.

The truck stopped on the Gateway Motorway after the plaster sheeting slid from the back of the tray of the truck and landed on the roadway below about 10.15am.

A light pole was hit by the falling plaster sheeting and Energex were at the scene assessing the damage and directing traffic.

Police said the plaster looked like gyprock sheets.

"It's a bit of a no-go zone at the minute, so we are asking people to avoid the location if they can," a police spokesman said.

"We currently have two lanes closed and we are trying to establish the clean-up of the site.

"We are going to talk with the Department of Transport and Main Roads and Brisbane City Council about the clean-up."

Police said the clean-up could take several hours.

Police said it appeared the truck had collided with something as it drove along the Gateway Motorway and the driver felt the load slip.

Ambulance and police crews were checking to see if a person had been struck by the falling gyprock and was trapped under the heavy sheeting.

Once checks were complete, bulldozers and cleaning equipment would be called in.
