Tirupur: Sixty transsexuals from the Tamil Nadu Periyaveedu Kootamaippu in Tirupur on Monday donated food and other items worth Rs 30,000 for the flood-affected people in Kerala. They handed over the items to the district administration.
K Diyva, 28, a transsexual, told TOI: “The items were donated by transsexuals residing at Nerupperichal and Ammapalayam in the city. We understand the grief of those affected in floods in Kerala. We want to help them.”
District social welfare officer I Poongothai said the transsexuals had donated items like wheat flour, oil, biscuits and sanitary napkins. “These items will be sent to Kerala along with the materials contributed by the Tirupur district administration. Despite difficulties, the transsexuals had come forward to donate. It was an applaudable effort,” she added.
Similarly, a 10-year-old boy in the city donated Rs 3,000 for the same cause. He has saved the money to buy a bicycle.
M Kamalesh of Kodikambam, a Class V student, donated Rs 3,000 he had saved to buy a bicycle. “I watched the sufferings of people in Kerala ravaged by floods in TV channels. I expressed my wish to my parents to donate the money I had saved.”
Kamalesh’s father is running a fancy store at Bhavani Nagar in Kodikambam. Kamalesh’s mother M Leela Devi said, “He was saving the donated money for the past six months to buy a bicycle.”
“When Chennai was affected with floods in 2015, Kamalesh donated food items worth Rs 4,000,” she added.
