No dearth of medicines, says Collector

Life is thrown out of gear for those residing along the Godavari coast with the river turning furious and the sheet of water inundating the residential areas.

Two pregnants from Ainavillilanka, who did not want to be identified, were forced to walk in waist-deep water on Monday morning, as they had an appointment with a private doctor at Amalapuram. Only after walking the water-logged stretch, they could take an auto-rickshaw.

“An aged woman suffered giddiness and no medical aid was available locally. We rushed her to a private hospital in a three-wheeler,” said P. Venkatesh, a resident of Ainavilli.

Providing medical aid to the pregnants in the agency area, where about 18 villages are cut off, proved to be a major challenge for the officials.

Special labour rooms have been set up in the relief camps and instructions given to all the ancillary midwives to rush the women to the nearby camps.

“Along with medical camps, we have arranged labour rooms in the agency mandals, since the doctors at the primary health centres say the due date for a good number of pregnants is approaching. There is no dearth of medicines and other facilities in the camps,” said Kartikeya Misra, district Collector.
