Two more persons were confirmed dead by authorities on Sunday, taking the official death toll in rain-ravaged Kodagu district to eight.
Relief Commissioner Gangaram Baderia said the multiple agency rescue mission continued despite unabated rains in the last 48 hours.
In a daring operation that lasted nine hours on Saturday evening, a team of 20 members, comprising four mountaineers, eight navy divers, and members of the civil defence team, trekked over seven hours to rescue 128 people who were stranded in the isolated hilly regions.
They were from Kallur, Devasur, Bari Belachu, and Mandalpatti villages.
Those rescued included three persons aged around 85 years, according to the Relief Commissioner.
The senior citizens were carried on improvised stretchers in the rough uphill terrain while a woman in advanced stage of pregnancy was also rescued in the operation.
Another mission on Sunday saw the rescue of 28 people, including five women and six children, from Battathur, Madenadu and Monnangeri. As many as 1,194 specialised rescuers are involved in the operations that are under way in Kodagu.
Medical teams
Five medical teams have been sent to Kodagu. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has deployed 300 pourakarmikas, seven health inspectors, and engineers.
As on Saturday, 123 km of road have been damaged in Kodagu besides 58 culverts, 278 government buildings, and 3,899 electricity poles and transformers.
