More than 3,500 people have been rescued during the operations carried out by various teams in rain-ravaged Kodagu, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy informed the President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday.
Briefing the President, who had called to enquire about the situation in the district, Mr. Kumaraswamy said the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other rescue teams involved in the operations had rescued more than 3,500 people so far.
The Chief Minister, who canceled his scheduled visit to Chickmagaluru and Shivamogga, conducted an aerial survey of Kodagu for the second consecutive day on Saturday, taking stock of the situation in Somwarpet, Suntikoppa, Madapura, Mukkodlu, Harangi backwaters, Siddapura, Kushalnagar and surrounding areas.
He later landed at the helipad in Periyapatna and went to Madikeri by road. Enroute, Mr. Kumaraswamy met the victims in Avarthi, Sai Extension and Kuvempunagar Extension in Kushalnagar and assured Government aid. Flood waters had submerged about 150 to 200 houses in Sai Extension, another 400 houses had been affected in Kuvempunagar Extension.
Addressing hundreds of displaced people sheltered in the Relief Centre at Suntikoppa, Mr. Kumaraswamy said the government will take all necessary measures to rehabilitate the people affected by rains in Kodagu.
After reaching Madikeri, Mr. Kumaraswamy held a meeting with the district administration officials and discussed rescue and relief operations. Minister for Tourism and Sericulture S.R. Mahesh, who is also the minister in charge of Kodagu district, and Deputy Commissioner Srividya P. were also present.
