DMK women’s wing president and Rajya Sabha member M.K. Kanimozhi on Sunday morning visited the family of A. Durai (56), who was killed in stampede while paying homage to the mortal remains of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at Rajaji Hall in Chennai on August 8.

Ms. Kanimozhi visited the house of Durai near Anna Nagar here and consoled his wife and other family members.

According to the family, Durai and his wife D. Subbulakshmi, who had previously served as a Madurai Corporation councillor of the DMK, boarded a train to Chennai soon after hearing the news of the DMK president’s demise.

‘Mathichiyam’ Velmurugan, associated with the DMK, who also travelled with the couple to Chennai, said the stampede happened soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Rajaji Hall. “The police did not handle the crowd properly. Following a security breach during VVIP visit, they restricted the crowd to a small area, resulting in the stampede,” he said.

Durai was taken to a government hospital in Chennai, where he was declared dead, Mr. Velmurugan said. Durai is survived by his wife and three sons.
