SEC makes changes in local self-govt election rules

Mumbai: In a bid to tighten the screws on dishonest politicians, who make a mockery of basic electoral decency, the State Election Commision (SEC) directed that candidates contesting for local self-government elections are obliged to reveal the source of income of their wifes and children along with theirs.

Under the current rules, candidates are only expected to disclose their assets and liabilities and those of their spouses and three dependents. JS Saharia, Chief Election Commissioner announced that the declaration the source of income must also be made public.

“The candidates have to submit their last three years’ assets, liabilities and the same details of their dependents. These details should include agricultural income, business, capital gain, donations or gifts. They also have to show the agreements done with the government, semi-government organisations, local self governments.
