Maoist surrender before police in Giridih

A hardcore Maoist on Saturday surrendered before the police in Giridih district saying he was fed up with mindless killings and other crimes by the rebels.

The rebel identified as Babuchand Marandi alias Suraj of Parasnath area surrendered in the presence of DC, Giridih Manoj Kumar and SP Surendra Kumar Jha and others police officials ASP Deepak Kumar, SDPO Manish Toppo and other senior police officers here with a promise to work for the welfare of tribals.

Babuchand Marandi functioned as ‘area commander of Ajay Mahto squad for ‘Parashnath Maoist zone in the district, was involved in around dozen criminal acts including murder, and encounter in the year 2009 with Giridih police, said the SP.

After joining the banned outfit in 2002 he took active part in naxal activities and was involved in several ambush of security forces, explosions and encounters with security men, besides the killings, the SP said.

The rebel told the police that he was disillusioned with the activities of the red rebels and realised that the ultras have deviated from their original ideology.

Anguished over loot, extortion and mindless killings, particularly that of innocent tribals, the rebel said he was keen to return to the social mainstream and work for poor tribals. The surrender of the duo showed more and more Maoists are eager to return to the mainstream as they are fed up with the activities of the naxals,” the SP said.
