Scrapped currency notes seized in Surat

Surat police in Gujarat on Saturday arrested three persons in possession of scrapped currency notes worth Rs 3.36 crore, almost 20 months after the Modi government’s audacious demonetisation move that scrapped high value Rs 1000 and Rs 500 currency notes in circulation.

Total 24,000 notes of Rs 500 denomination, amounting to Rs 1.20 crore, and 21,600 notes of Rs 1000 denomination with a face value of Rs 2.16 crore were seized during search conducted by the police in the Diamond city.

The three persons arrested by the cops are Gagansinh Rajput, Mohammad Ali Sheikh and Latif Sheikh.

They were travelling in a private car when the police intercepted their vehicle and launched the search based on intelligence inputs.

The police have also recovered three mobile phones from the accused, who were being interrogated to ascertain details regarding origin of such a large consignment of scrapped currency.
