HYDERABAD: In fact, it is fair to say the threat of drinking
water shortage in the city has eased thanks to the gush of hope.
Of the 448 million gallons per day (mgd) of drinking water supplied in Hyderabad and peripheral areas, as much as 268 mgd is drawn from
Krishna river at Nagarjunasagar. With water cascading into Sagar, the HMWS&SB has withdrawn plans to go in for emergency pumping of water from the dam.
“Based on the instructions of irrigation department, the water board has withdrawn its move to use emergency pumping station at Puttamgandi. We do not require emergency pumping, now that the water level in the dam is rising steadily and is set to reach FRL by the end of this monsoon,” a senior HMWS&SB official told STOI.
With emergency pumping off its head, the water board can save big time on the power bill as well. Last year, when the board pressed emergency pumps, it ran up a huge electricity bill of Rs 5 crore. But, the water board is not ready to go for the jugular. The officials say that there is no proposal at present to supply water daily and that the present system of alternate day supply will continue.
