The existing structure to be demolished; GHMC to bear the expenditure

The State government has issued orders giving administrative sanction to reconstruct Mahboob Chowk or Murgi Chowk at Laad Bazar, Charminar, by demolishing the existing structure at a cost of ₹36 crore with the GHMC bearing the entire expenditure.

Municipal Administration & Urban Development Secretary Arvind Kumar issued the orders following a request from GHMC Commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy after a recent inspection by Chief Secretary S.K. Joshi and others in the area.

Earlier, the municipal corporation had commissioned JNTU to check the structural stability of Murgi Chowk and whether it was fit for restoration and conservation work. A team comprising M. Janardhana, civil engineering professor, and technical staff visited the building and reported that it was not fit for living/occupancy and was in a dilapidated condition.

“There are cracks at several spots and the foundation appears to be weak. In the event of heavy rain or a minor earthquake, the structure may not withstand the load,” the team testified.

The civic body would now have to call for tenders to take up the work, the orders said.
