IDUKKI: Four people were killed and six went missing in rain-related incidents in Idukki district on Friday.

Thankamma George (54), a native of Mlamala, drowned in floodwaters. A farmer committed suicide at Upputhara due to crop loss. The body of Kuzhimattathil Anil (44), from Kollamkunnu near Muttam, was recovered, while a human skeleton was found near Chappath bridge on Friday morning. With this, the death toll in the past four days touched 11.

Munnar has been totally cut off due to flood and heavy rain for the past four days.

Traffic on Kochi-Dhanushkodi national highway at Munnar and on Munnar-Udumalaipetai route was totally held up. Over 500 houses in the area were destroyed and power and mobile networks have been disrupted.

Meanwhile, low rainfall was recorded in the district on Friday. Idukki reservoir level touched 2,401.92 feet at 3pm. Presently 1,500 cubic metre per second water is being released and 115 cubic metre per second being used for power generation, said officials.

Nearly 30 media persons have been stranded in a hotel at Cheruthoni for the past two days. “There is no food and water in the area. The mobile networks are out. Power is also disrupted,” said Jeev Tom Mathew, correspondent of Mathrubhumi News.

The water level in Mullaperiyar recorded 141.30 feet on Friday.

Road caved in at Peermade on Kottarakkara-Dindigul national highway on Friday. Traffic on Kattappana-Thodupuha and Kumily-Munnar routes were disrupted due to landslides and landslips.

However, traffic has resumed on Chappath bridge near Kattappana on Friday.
