After a successful campaign in Common Wealth Games, the sports persons of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) are eyeing the Asian Games to scale new heights. According to the corporation officials, ONGC has one of the largest contingents of athletes at Asian Games being held from August 18 to September 2 at Jakarta. Thirty-eight ONGC sports persons- nineteen regular employees from various disciplines and an equal number of athletes on scholarship shall be participating in the Games.

Importantly, the women athletes comprise 50 per cent of the total contingent, which is being cited as a testimony to ONGC’s constant drive to promote gender equality.

The chairman and managing director of ONGC, Shashi Shanker said, “ONGC has a policy of nurturing sports talent in different fields. The success of its sportspersons reflects the company’s focus on the development of games and sports. I wish all Indian athletes phenomenal success in Asian Games-2018,” said Shanker.

It will be recalled here that the ONGC contingent had displayed its mettle at the recently concluded Common Wealth Games at Gold Coast. ONGC sportspersons bagged 13 medals, which is the highest tally of medals from corporate sphere. These included five Gold, three Silver and five Bronze, contributing to the 66-medal tally of the Indian team.

The corporation officials state that the reason behind the high success ratio of ONGC players at the highest international level is the special focus that ONGC gives to the budding talent of the country. Each year, the company sends selected sportspersons on specialised training abroad. In addition, the progress of the athletes is monitored at each stage in tandem with the sports federations. The objective is to help the athletes perform better at the international level, and in the process contribute to the development of sports in the country.
